The District of the Virgin Islands, created in 1917 following the United States purchase of the islands from Denmark, holds court in Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas and in Christiansted on St. Croix. It is one of the few territorial courts that exercises both federal-district-court jurisdiction and local-court jurisdiction. The district has a substantial docket of maritime, narcotics-trafficking, and tourism-related civil cases.
