The District of the Virgin Islands, created in 1917 following the United States purchase of the islands from Denmark, holds court in Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas and in Christiansted on St. Croix. The district has a substantial docket of maritime, narcotics-trafficking, and tourism-related civil cases.
