Magistrate Judge Steve B. Chu was appointed to the Southern District of California by the district court judges in 2023.
Judge Chu was appointed on June 30, 2023 and serves a renewable eight-year term, based in San Diego. He is the first Asian American to serve as a magistrate judge in the Southern District of California. Prior to his judicial appointment, he worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California beginning in 2006, representing the U.S. government in medical malpractice, personal injury, and wrongful death lawsuits. He began his career in private practice before joining the U.S. Attorney's Office.
