About Judge Alison M. Breaux

Judge Breaux graduated with honors from Kent State University and entered the University of Akron, School of Law in 1998. During her time in law school, Breaux competed statewide and nationally in several trial competitions, including the National Trial Academy and Tournament of Champions. She graduated in 2001 and began practicing as a civil law firm. As a litigator, she represented various types of clients, from individual claimants, to business owners to insurance companies in an array of civil suits including personal injury, torts, contract disputes, product liability and employment law. In 2004 Breaux left the civil arena to practice criminal defense where she represented individuals, often indigent, charged with crimes at both the misdemeanor and felony level. In 2012 Breaux was appointed as a magistrate in the Akron Municipal Court where she presided over cases primarily in landlord/tenant disputes, small monetary claims and evictions. After five years on the bench as a magistrate, Breaux was elected in 2016 to the Summit County Court of Common Pleas General Division in 2017. She currently maintains a docket of 450 cases – both civil (foreclosures, administrative appeals, and litigation – personal injury, business and contract disputes, medical malpractice and wrongful death) and criminal (low level drug and theft offenses to arson, sexual assault, felonious assault, trafficking in drugs to murder). In January 2018 Judge Breaux set out to develop the first felony mental health court in Summit County. Garnering partnerships from local agencies and organizations dedicated to helping those diagnosed with mental illness, Breaux was able to begin the HOPE (Healing, Opportunity, Progress and Empowerment) Mental Health Court Program in the fall of 2018. The Program is designed to assist individuals diagnosed with severe mental illnesses to develop the ability to live positive, healthy and stable lives in the community. As one participant described the program: “Because of the dedicated team led by Judge Breaux, HOPE Court is guaranteed to guide a person towards leading a stable and healthy life. I have a Team ready and willing to help and to listen to my concerns. I am surrounded by people who care. Normally this much compassion is hard to find in the justice system.” Breaux was married in 2000 and currently lives in Akron, Ohio with her husband and their three children. She is an active member of the Akron Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the Scanlon Inn of Court, and she serves on the boards of The United Way of Summit and Medina County, The Akron Canton Regional Foodbank, and the Summit County National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
